Falmouth Road Race Community Partner in the Spotlight: The Falmouth Senior Center

By Olivia dePunte

The Falmouth Senior Center has been a “real gem for Falmouth” since it opened its doors in June of 2021. Director Jill Bishop is proud to report that of Falmouth’s 14,025 full-time residents aged 60 and up, over 9,400 have enrolled in its services.

The Senior Center welcomes everyone aged 60 and above to take part in their social and wellbeing programs, fitness room and classes, and abundance of resources. “That’s what I love about it,” says Bishop. “There’s so many opportunities for people to stay active, not just mentally and socially but psychically – it’s the whole gambit.”

Promoting healthy aging is key to the Senior Center’s mission, and the fitness room and classes are essential. While the center was being constructed, The Falmouth Road Race donated a grant of ____ to provide the brand new fitness equipment. “Growing up running the road race myself and knowing how much they give back to the community I thought they could be part of this project and support the wellness component of this healthy aging mission,” shares Bishop. “The board members always say ‘we’re here for you’ and ‘how can we help?’ and they are very much a community partner to us without a doubt.”

Bishop dubbed the fitness room “The Heights” room in honor of the road race’s iconic finish line. Decked out with a mix of cardio and strength-training machines, with pictures from the road race decorating the walls, “it’s a really good energy in the room.” Whether seniors choose to train like they are pushing up the final hill, or going for a gentle Surf Drive walk, it’s important to Jill that the room remains a non-intimidating and welcoming space for people of all abilities.

“We try to think about what kind of programs people need and want in generations of older adults,” says Bishop, “and a fitness room crosses those generations to serve them all.” The room has been popular since the start, and the center has even begun extending its hours to meet the high demand. On top of that, the fitness space offers 45 classes a week for all levels, ranging from yoga to line-dancing and everything in between. “We do a two-month series and it’s like signing up for concert tickets, they’re that popular!”

“The first thing that caught my eye was people would do an exercise class and then go into the cafe altogether,” says Bishop, “and the socialization piece is huge.” It’s become a vibrant community space that draws older folk in to spend hours doing different things, whether that’s a workout that turns into a shared cup of coffee or a zumba class that leads into a game of pool.

Many members even use the fitness room to train for the Falmouth Road Race each summer. When asked if any seniors from the center run the road race, Bishop answered with a resounding “A ton!” The age of people range from their 60s well into their 90s taking classes and working out to hit their personal goals. “Looking at people aging and still doing something like running the Falmouth Road Race is such an accomplishment.”

The Senior Center’s mission to promote healthy aging applies to a real range of seniors, and their programs cater to the generational gaps. “There’s a need, a want, and a nice to have when it comes to our members,” explains Bishop. “One woman after the pandemic even said this place saved my life.”

One thing is for certain: since the Falmouth Senior Center cut its ribbon just after the pandemic it has succeeded in Director Jill Bishop’s core mission: “to change the perception of what people envision a senior center is.” Even the fitness room has become so much more than its equipment but an essential gathering place to motivate Falmouth’s seniors of all ages and abilities to age healthy and strong.
