FALMOUTH, MA (September 21, 2016)—Dozens of top age-group runners, from 12 to 85 years old, were celebrated Tuesday night at the fourth-annual New Balance Falmouth Road Race Awards and Recognition Reception, held at the Coonamessett Inn.
“The New Balance Falmouth Road Race gives so much back to the community, but it remains a highly competitive road race,” said Dave McGillivray, race director, as he addressed the winners. “I love the fact that a lot of people take this real seriously.”
Highlighting the evening, Michael Stone and Nancy McGee were announced as winners of the Margaret Bradley Award as the fastest male and female finishers from Falmouth.
Stone, 29, was the fastest Falmouth finisher in the men’s age 24-29 age group, with a time of 39:59. A Falmouth native, Stone was a top-10 finisher at 1000 meters for Falmouth High School at the 2005 state indoor championships before going on to compete for Brandeis. He has competed in the New Balance Falmouth Road Race 10 times, going back to 2002, and also won the Margaret Bradley Award in 2008. Stone is a manager at Suntility Electric LLC.
McGee, 34, was the fastest Falmouth finisher in the women’s age 30-34 division, with a time of 48:18. The former Nancy Porter grew up in Sagamore Beach, and was a two-time New Bedford Standard-Times Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year for Bishop Stang High School. In 1999, at the age of 17, McGee won her age group in the New Balance Falmouth Road Race, and in 2007 she won the Johnny Kelley Half Marathon women’s division, finishing fifth overall. She is a special education teacher at North Falmouth Elementary School.
The Margaret Bradley Award is named for a Falmouth High School graduate who lost her life in 2004 while on a run in the Grand Canyon at the age of 24. Bradley’s father, Keith, presented the awards, assisted by his wife, Mary Jo.
Also honored at the reception were the top male and female finishers in each of the race’s 16 age groups who were not part of the invitational elite athlete program.
The oldest winner at the reception was Doris Beatty, 81, who won her 80-84 age group. Beatty, a longtime race volunteer, ran Falmouth for the first time in 1994, retiring from competition after 20 consecutive years only to decide in 2015, after a year off, that a comeback was in order.
“I still felt good, so I decided to start up again,” said Beatty, who is already looking forward to next year.
