Falmouth Road Race, Inc. to Acquire Falmouth in the Fall from Cape Cod MOVES

Falmouth, MA (June 12, 2020) – Falmouth in the Fall, a classic local road race held each autumn since 1979, is now under the direction of Falmouth Road Race, Inc.

The race, which is run on the same seaside course as the New Balance Falmouth Road Race, was founded by Jack Oser, who is also co-founder of the Cape Cod Marathon, along with Jim and Betty Gehris, long-time Falmouth Road Race volunteers. After directing the race for about eight years, the Gehrises turned over the duties to Don Facey, who served as race director until 2018. Last year, the race was put on by Cape Cod MOVES, and had 299 finishers.

“We’re excited and honored that Cape Cod MOVES has entrusted us to become the next guardian of this town treasure,” said Scott Ghelfi, president of the Falmouth Road Race., Inc. board of directors. “I’ve run it myself, and always looked forward to it. Preserving its charm will be our privilege.”

Due to the COVID-19 situation, a decision has not yet been made on whether Falmouth in the Fall, scheduled for its 41st running on November 1, can be conducted in 2020. More information will be forthcoming. The New Balance Falmouth Road Race, originally scheduled for August 16, will be run as an At-Home Edition from August 15-August 29. Entries are still available at www.falmouthroadrace.com. For runners or walkers who want to get their names printed on their bibs, which will be mailed along with the traditional race mug and other special giveaways, the registration deadline is June 24.

“Cape Cod MOVES was proud to be a steward of the Falmouth in the Fall race,” said Carl Gustafson, a MOVES founder. “It is one of the backbone events of Falmouth running, and has always piggybacked so well with its ‘big sister’ race. We’re comfortable knowing that Falmouth Road Race, Inc. will continue the spirit of Falmouth in the Fall – known for its charitable giving, family feel and off-season delight.”

Falmouth in the Fall will continue to honor Don Facey with an award in his name, as a tribute to his years of service.

Cape Cod MOVES, which is transitioning from a nonprofit to a club, will continue to stand for Motion, Optimism, Volunteer, Energize and Strong, with a motto of “Smile. Move forward. Help others. Repeat.” Visit www.capecodmoves.org.
