This week’s veteran runner tip focuses on heat and humidity. We all know how hot and humid the weather can be in Falmouth in August, and if you’ve ever run the race, you know how much the weather can change from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM! Once you come out of the woods and onto Surf Drive after Mile 3, that sun is HOT.
Before the race, veteran runners recommend training outdoors in the summer heat and humidity to help your body to acclimate. If you’re usually a treadmill runner, or complete most of your training runs very early or very late in the day, mix it up and get in a couple of sessions where you’re a little more exposed to the elements.
On race day, veteran runners recommend hydrating the day before, and staying hydrated on race day. Dress for the weather in light, moisture-wicking clothing. Listen to your body - the harder and faster you push, the more heat you produce. If you’re starting to feel the effects of the heat, slow down.
